Seems like one of the Penny Arcade dudes was a dick about trans people last night.
One of my oldest and best friends in the whole world was in town and we ate pizza, so I missed out on the twitter explosion.
I don’t have a lot to say about it other than these two things:
My whole life I never understood the desire to force other people to define themselves as what you prefer. This is why talking about any sort of feminism/trans issues/gay marriage is so exhausting, because the answer should be obvious: just fuckin’… just let people define themselves as whatever they feel they are.
On the other hand, if someone’s not necessarily intentionally being a dick, or maybe just comes to it out of a place of ignorance, the solution is not to tell them to get hit by a bus. What the fuck. Don’t tell anyone to get hit by a bus, ever. Don’t tell the kid on Xbox Live that yells “faggot” to get hit by a bus and HE’S being a shit on purpose (and that’s what we wants you to do anyway). That sort of language makes all of us look bad. Instead, maybe like talk to them and say “I know this is the internet and you were trying to be snarky and ribbing on Kotaku is REALLY fun, but here’s some real shit I’d like to break down to you about people’s feelings…”
Maybe then twitter wouldn’t blow up all the time. :|
